Socks and warm feet…

I’m a huge fan of hand knit socks to keep your feet warm.  So when I knit my socks a small number of them have longer legs for me to wear under my hiking boots.  My latest pair with the longer legs, exactly for this reason, are one of my February socks made out of Regia.  Naturally I wore them yesterday when I went out to photograph the sunrise.

Despite everything I’ve said about keeping your feet warm I came home with cold feet, but that’s not fault of the socks!  So  I curled up on the sofa where Pebbles the dog decided she would make a perfect foot warmer.  Fortunately I managed to get this shot on my phone that not only shows how pretty Pebbles is, but also the colours of the sock.

Man (or Woman’s) Best Friend

I love dogs.  They really can be your best friend and far more reliable than most creatures.  So whenever I hear about research into their history / evolution my curiosity is always engaged.  Recently a tweet about the oldest dog remains challenging current theories caught my eye and I just had to find out more.

So here it is in a nut shell.  The remains of a dog from part of Russia has been dated at 33,000 years old (independent carbon dating by 3 different labs) and is much closer to domesticated breeds than wild wolves based on bone structure.  Previous estimates had placed domestication closer to 26,000 years ago.  There is lots of blurb, facts and figures, but the upshot is these remains are being used as evidence that domestication took place earlier than thought.  Some researchers are using this (and other evidence) to speculate that it in fact it happened independently in different places across a rather large time frame.

How fascinating!  I guess a good idea is simply a good idea, regardless of time and location.  I’ve also read about research into dogs which says they have specifically evolved to interpret human facial emotions, allowing them to modify their behaviour appropriately.  This is shown by dogs scanning the right side of human faces first because of our asymmetry and how we show our emotions.  I’ve been on the look out for this since and my two definitely do it.

pebbles-tea-begging

Here is Pebbles ‘begging’ in a cafe on holiday recently.  Her happiness seemed to revolve around convincing people to let her have their cups of tea, strokes, the occasional bit of toast, cuddles and fuss, with the odd run through some bracken thrown in for good measure.  That dog has really worked out how to wrap people round her little paw!

Speculation about domestication includes discussion on the symbiotic relationship which was beneficial to both the wolves/dogs and early humans.  When I look at the photo above of Pebbles begging it would be easy to assume that the symbiosis has turned into a parasitic relationship.  Neither Jake or Pebbles work, I’m the one going out to earn money to provide us with material things.  They certainly don’t have to hunt for their dinner!  But you know I think it’s still symbiotic.  I provide the shelter, food and warmth (central heating), they provide protection, love and companionship.  Whenever and for whatever reasons domestication happened, I’m really glad it did.  Ok I’d better go and make pebbles another cup of tea hehe…

Pebbles Walking Hat Testing

I’ve been absolutely amazed by the responses to some of the hats I’ve been making.  Especially to one particular silly little hat……

Pebbles-Hat---Charlotte-1-copy

This hat was only ever intended for me to keep my ears warm while walking the dogs.  I wanted something warm with ear flaps, inspired by the big floppy ears of Pebbles the dog.

Pebbles-Hat---Sue-1-copy

However, when some friends were over visiting, they loved it!  Then another day I took it into work (I was the only person with warm ears that day believe me) and my colleagues all loved it as well.  In fact just about everyone wanted to put it on!

Pebbles-Hat---Charlotte-copy

There was a lot of pulling faces and clowning about (yes my boss really did pretend it was the helmet of a medieval knight and rode an imaginary horse around the room while wearing it – I think it might have been an imaginary jousting contest but I was laughing to hard to ask).  The one thing this hat did for everyone who tried it on was to cheer them up and put a smile on their face.  Eventually I decided sometimes it’s cool to look that silly at work……

So this silly little bit of yarn has now been christened the ‘Pebbles Walking Hat’ and I’m hoping to have it test knitted real soon Smile

Rock Cakes and Doggies…

Yesterday I felt the urge to make some ‘rock cakes’ to take into work.  At this time of year everyone is tired and I also have a new cake tin to christen.  Seemed like a good plan to me…

rock-cakes-1

It’s a modified version of a cookie recipe, it’s quick, easy, and they usually disappear very rapidly.  There was only one problem.  They were disappearing BEFORE anyone could get near them.  The culprit was soon found looking guilty behind the sofa.  Pebbles the dog had somehow managed to get some off the work top in the kitchen and was intent on scoffing them as fast as possible.

She was duly turfed out into the conservatory as punishment.  Jake for his part (which was none) was given an ear rub and allowed to snore on the sofa.  I think Pebbles is plotting her revenge against him for that……

Stuck Inside.

Given my current ‘stuck inside’ status looking out at blue skies and sunshine is akin to torture.  Spring is desperately trying to make an impression in the garden and I simply can’t get out there.

Ivy-Cottage002

My garden is not very big, but I love it.  There is nothing better than coming home on a lovely summers evening and heading out onto the patio to drink tea and relax.  Ok, maybe there are some things better…… but you get the idea.

Ivy-Cottage003

The thing is, all gardeners will tell you that you don’t get those lovely wonderful relaxing summer evenings surrounded by natures beauty without laying the groundwork earlier in the year (or should that be spadework).

Ivy-Cottage007

I’m simply itching to get out there and get stuck in, but since I can’t, I’ve been looking back at previous years and making plans.  These are all photos taken in my garden last year.

Ivy-Cottage011

My garden has gone through quite a few changes in the last 3 years or so.  When I first moved in it was left to it’s own devices for quite a while.  I needed to prioritise my time and the garden was too far down the list for anything beyond keeping the patio relatively weed free.  However as things have been knocked off the list the garden began to crawl up there.

Ivy-Cottage005

So about 3 and half years ago it was finally time to get stuck in.  The first incarnation of the ‘new’ garden basically involved clearing the debris away that had been building up and removing the 25 leylandii.  I had no idea what possessed the previous occupant to plant these as they were stupidly large for the garden.  Interestingly, I received a letter about 2 months after taking them outs from a neighbours estate agent ‘requiring’ me to remove them as they were damaging her fence.  I replied rather snottily that they had been removed some time ago, that the fence in question was actually mine and in fact was being damaged by one of her trees!

Ivy-Cottage006

This incarnation of the garden lasted for about a year before version 2 came along.  This involved removing the small lawn at the side of the cottage and putting in a fruit and veg area.

Ivy-Cottage012

I had never grown my own food before so this was a new venture for me and I loved it.  First in were strawberries.  Remember the dreaming of those summer evenings?  Well in that dream I’m eating freshly picked strawberries (or cherries) hehe……

Ivy-Cottage015

Unfortunately that’s when it all went wrong again.  Why?  Hmmm…  One word…… Pebbles! That naughty puppy destroyed everything.  She would steal things from inside, chew them up outside and burry them in the veg beds.  Everything was chewed and she even ate a lilac tree!

Ivy-Cottage010

And so was born version 3 with Alcatraz.  About a third of the patio was screened off with a raised bed and fence forming a doggie area.  The dogs can go out there whenever they want and any precious plants were moved out of the way.  The fence has been raised a few times but currently seems to be containing Pebbles.

Ivy-Cottage014

This leaves the rest of the garden for me.  But as I sit here gazing out of the window longingly, I can’t help but start to make plans for version 4.  The fruit and veg area could be better organised and I’m sure I could do something better with the front garden.  Just exactly what I’m not sure.  Hmm perhaps rather than seeing this enforced confinement as torture I should view it as plotting and scheming time hehe……

Someone Please Remind Me

Could someone please remind me why I love my dogs?  I mean what is it that convinces me to put up with all the mayhem they cause?

Why am I asking this right now?  Well I’m just recovering from being ill.  In fact I currently can’t even pop the kettle on without having to sit down from the coughing and dizziness.  (But believe me this is a vast improvement on the two weeks I looked like an extra from a Zombie movie)  So you can imagine how overjoyed I was when Pebbles decided to go on the rampage this morning.  There were casualties, my favourite lamp, two duvets, my sanity……

There was also doggie smell making.  I’ll spare you the details as I’m sure you can imagine.  Mind you, the cats were funny at this point, haughtily demanding to be let out the front away from such offensive gases.

So I come back to my original question – why do I love this fur spreading, possession destroying, attention demanding creature…….

pebbles 2

Hmmmm….  must be that cute little face and her ability to convince me that her entire world revolves around me.  At least until her next rampage…..

Winter Wonderland

Right now I have two dogs.  One is a very happy dog…. the other isn’t.

snowy-woods-17

This is Pebbles.  Pebbles is a happy dog.  Why?  Well she’s just been for a run down the woods in the snow.  This as far as Pebbles is concerned is wonderful.  She gets to run and snow plough and bound about like a puppy.  Mummy is there and she even remembered her camera.

Jake on the other hand had to stay at home because of his leg.  This means Jake is not a happy dog.  There is snow out there and he should be outside playing in it.  Life just isn’t fair when you’re a doggie with a poorly leg…..

It was a beautiful day down the woods, even if the walk had to be cut short because I was freezing.  I had lots of layers on but still I could feel myself getting colder and colder.  I love the cold but it just doesn’t seem to love me.  It never ceases to amaze me how such a familiar landscape can be transformed by a dusting of frozen water.

snowy-woods-8

While we were out I spotted these pine cones with snow on them.  How very seasonal.  I also saw some holly with snow on it but couldn’t really stop that since it would have meant holding up the traffic going into Tesco’s car park.  I didn’t really think that would go down well.

But the main object of desire for my camera was my beautiful Pebbles.

snowy-woods-18

I took loads of shots of her bounding about and simply looking happy in the snow.  There are few things I love more than to be out and about with my dogs and my camera.  This last one of her has got to be one of the funniest shots of her I’ve ever taken.  snowy-woods-1

I have lots of shots of her with her ears bouncing up and down like pigtails on a little girl but having the tongue out as well really cracks me up.

Anyway now we are back in the warm, safe and sound with several large sacks of doggie food stacked behind the sofa to make sure we don’t run short.  Time to snuggle up and get out the knitting…. and maybe a cuppa tea Winking smile

Going to the Dogs…..

Like many animals lovers I’ve spent this evening snuggling with my little furry beasts.  I don’t normally need to do this as the barrage of fireworks doesn’t normally bother them.  This year however has been different - Jake the dogs has a bad leg.  It’s strapped up with a splint on it but he’s feeling sorry for himself.  So I’ve spent much of the evening knitting with a large black dog under my legs, on my lap or flopped by my feet.  I would take a photo of this but Jakes not looking his best at the moment.  So instead here are some photos from earlier in the year of Jake and Pebbles (his partner in crime).

I’ll take some photos of the projects I’ve finished this week and post them tomorrow (beasties allowing)…..
