Isn’t it weird…

Isn’t it weird when normally separate areas of your life join up.  This happened to me today when I was reading a colleagues copy of New Scientist.  This issue was a few weeks old but an article caught my eye which I thought you might be interested in.

It was about a 5 year project called Leapfrog (yes it’s an acronym, no I don’t remember what for) that has been working towards automated custom tailoring.  The basic idea is that you would be scanned by lasers that would then adjust various ‘standard’ patterns to your measurements.  Changes could then be made by you, to provide even more individuality, and then at the press of a button your info would whoosh off to an automated factory.  That’s where all the robots would make your made to measure suit or garment.

I swiped this image off the Leapfrog website.

They had some pretty funky ideas in there as well such as metal mesh adjustable tailors dummies the controlling computer could easily alter to your exact size.  Then pins would pop out and hold the fabric in place (yes I had many macabre thoughts at that point in the article).

It was all fascinating stuff but the guy they interviewed from Savile Row didn’t seem concerned by the competition.  He believed that lasers and computer software would never be able to replace the judgement of a good tailor.  I hope he’s right… if the robots get so sophisticated they can offer sensible fashion advice, I think we’re in serious trouble as a society.  I mean just imagine what a hacker could do!?!

A Sad Little Smile

Well this is a difficult post.  I’ve been sorting through some old backup files and decided I couldn’t put off sorting through a particular bunch of images any longer.

My father passed away a few years ago and I controversially decided to photograph his funeral.  It was a decision that many in my family didn’t really understand, but fortunately they kept their muttering about it out of my ear shot.  When stressed and emotional I’m not a person to cross.

In fact it was the stress and raw emotion that led me to pick up my camera.  Looking through the lens helped place a level of unreality on the day providing a coping mechanism.

The day passed in a blur and afterwards the images provided a focus for the grief to flow.  I’m a great believer in allowing yourself to grieve.  Bottling it up doesn’t help anyone.

The shots are far from my best but they serve their purpose.  I’ve not looked at them for quite some time but their effect on me is still strong.  However they don’t trigger tears anymore, but a smile…

Clock of Ages

If you had a clock that was designed to run for 10,000 years what would you call it?  I’d go with the ‘Clock of Ages’.  Well there are plans to build a purely mechanical clock that will run that long and the first prototype can be found in the Science Museum.

Sci-Museum-127-1

It was built by The Long Now Foundation which seeks to promote long term thinking.  As I wandered around the museum last week there were only 4 exhibits I went back to, and this was one.  I’d never heard of it but was attracted to it’s stunning face, that’s what prompted me to wander over to it’s glass case.  I just love beautifully made mechanical things.

Sci-Museum-130

I hope they get to build the big version which will be called the ‘Clock of the Long Now’.  Just thinking about it brings to mind all sorts of fantasy and post apocalyptic plots and story lines.  How cool would it be if this clock turned into a sort of Stonehenge for the people of the year 5000……

If you go down to the woods today…..

You may just bump into a mad woman with a tea pot!

tea pot 5

Yes, you guessed it.  In the search for some good natural lighting to photograph the new teapot cover I took it down the woods with me.  The yarn is Araucania Pomaire Multy which I purchased from Ally Pally.  There was only one skein left in this colour way so it needed a small project.  I’ve got plenty of the yarn left though so I think it might grow some bits at the top.  Maybe a cord to pull it off with or something like that.  I swear it has more green in it in real life though.

I did feel a little peculiar wandering round with a Tesco’s carrier bag with a tea pot in it – complete with tea cosy.

Since I normally only walk the dogs together and Jake has been injured, Pebbles has not been getting to go out as much as she’s used to.  So I decided to take her with me as well.  She thought this was fabulous and obviously wanted to help with the photos…

hat 1

So not only did I end up being mad woman with tea pot, I was mad woman with tea pot and dog!  Naturally since I didn’t have a nice shot of my new hat (which I made to help keep my head warm at work), I needed to take one of that as well.  The yarn is Scrumptious by Fyberspates in DK which I used double to get a nice thickness.  The pattern is called the Weekender by Woolly Wormhead.

Pebbles down the wood 7There was of course much mooching and running about by Pebbles and I just couldn’t resist taking some photos of her as well….

However as we walked back to the car I couldn’t help remembering a thread on Ravelry from a while back.  The person who started the thread was complaining about project photos including things such as cats when all she wanted to see was the knitting.  What on earth people would therefore make of a teapot down the woods with a dog I dread to think….

Ally Pally

Well after looking forward to it for months today was my visit to Ally Pally.  I’ve not been able to visit before but have heard so much about it.

There were quite a few coach trips going from this area but I managed to book onto one with several friends from the local knitting groups.  I was one of the last of this group to get on (there were several pickups) to find that the back seats upstairs had been nabbed for our motley crew.  Memories of the naughty kids always sitting on the back seat lept to mind and sure enough we were the loudest bunch on the coach.

The journey went smoothly and we arrived just before 10 o’clock.  Soon we were in and mooching about.  Unfortunately many of the stalls and exhibits had signs up asking people not to take photographs so I couldn’t take piccys of all the lovely yummy things we found.  I did take a few shots and hopefully none were of things people didn’t want photographed.

This is the most amazing miniture quilt.  It was part of an exhibition stand and was no more than 18 inches or so across.  The detailing was amazing.  I really admire quilts and maybe one day I will have enough spare time to have a go.  There were certainly many wonderful examples there including the most beautiful teddy bear one.  I really wanted to take a photo of that but the lady whose stall it was said no.  That sort of thing was disappointing but fair play I certainly understand.  It was a little harder to understand with the exhibition stalls, kind of seems to defeat the object of exhibiting but I suppose people are worried about copys being made or something.  Anyway I can away with the details of the lady with the Teddy bear quilt and maybe at some point in the near future I’ll persuade one of my quilting friends to help me get started.

Now these beautiful baubles were really eye catching.  Again beading is a craft that I’ve not really explored much but these really stood out.  I didn’t price them as I don’t decorate my home for Christmas, between 3 cats, 2 dogs and a tendancy to visit family anyway I don’t really see the point.  However if I did I could so easily see these gracing the lounge and flickering in candle light.

Now this huge, errr, white thing was on exhibition.  It caught my eye from a distance although I’m not entirely sure what it was.  It reminded me of a cross between a snowflake, a net curtain and a stencil.  I suppose it was a wall hanging.  Regardless I stood staring at it for quite a while.

Some of the big names you’d expect to see were also there.  The two photos above were taken on the Rowan stand.  I have a strange relationship with Rowan.  I really want to like it, especially the yarn, but invariably I’m disappointed.  If you get a good batch then it’s great but I find a lot of balls have knots.  I once bought a 50g ball and it had three knots in it.  So now I tend to admire Rowan and but buy it.

So what did I actually buy?  Well a beautiful leather handbag for my mother, some yarn to make a knitted Bagpuss and some wonderful hand dyed worsted weight silk.  The Bagpuss is an Alan Dart pattern and when I saw it I just knew it was going right to the top of my list of projects.  I don’t really remember the tv program much but it must have made an impression on me as a child.  Whenever I see a photo of Bagpuss I always want to reach out and cuddle him.  So now maybe I’ll get my own Bagpuss to cuddle.  The pattern calls for Aran yarn but I couldn’t find any of that in appropriate colours anywhere so had to settle for it in dk.  Still I can’t see why it shouldn’t work in dk provided I’m consistant throughout.  Fingers crossed….

Well like many knitters and crafters who were at the show today I’m now at home, drinking a cuppa and wondering if it’s to early to sneak off to bed.  Perhaps there will be wolly dreams of all the lovely projects I can make out of all the yummy yarn I bought, all presided over by the comforting presence of a Bagpuss……

It’s been a long time…..

It’s been a long time……

Since I managed to get to either of the knitting groups I normally go to.  This has been due to a change in jobs.  Don’t get me wrong I love my new job and wouldn’t change it for the world, I’ve just had to hit the ground running with it which has eaten into my free time…..

It’s been a long time…….

Since I bought any yarn!  I know this is something which would normally warrant my friends taking me to the doctors to check I’m ok.  However it’s been down to the change in jobs as well.  Why? Well….

It’s been a long time…….

Since I got paid.  By changing jobs and types of contracts I’ve got a gap of 2 1/2 months between pay packets.  Payment times are different etc etc and as I result I’m currently living on savings and friends feeding me.  Fortunately this period of enforced austerity is coming to an end this coming week.

It’s been a long time…….

Since I’ve been able to go shopping.  Real shopping.  Not the mooch about and try not to get upset that my friends are buying yarn and things while I’m having to scrimp to have enough money to buy tea.  My list of things to buy is getting longer but is headed by simple things like tights, new knickers, decent shampoo and a new head for my mop!  I’ve also been virtual yarn shopping and have a nice little list of things I want to buy for dyeing.

It’s also been a long time……..

Since I finished a knitting project.  This has mainly been down to my lack of free time and my current project being a lace shawl for my mother.  It’s out of one of my own dyed yarns and while the colours aren’t me I hope they’ll suit her.  But sshhhhhh don’t say anything cos it’s a surprise pressie ;-)

This is the yarn called Salmon Falls a 2 ply 100% BFL sock yarn.  I’ll post the finished shawl when I get it completed and blocked.
